Assignment 2

There are two options for this assignment. Option A is for individual and Option B is for group or individual. If you choose Option A, you have to do it all by yourself. If you choose option B, you can do it all by yourself or pair up with another student in your class.

Option A - LTSP

Task

Full installation of an LTSP server with support for Workstations to run a Web Browser program locally

Hardware: Your LTSP server can either run on the Lab machine or on your laptop. You need a cross-over CAT5 cable to connect your LTSP server to any of the Lab machine which acts as an LTSP workstation. If you run LTSP server on your laptop, you may need to have two Network Interface Device on it: one for connecting to the LTSP workstation, and the other for connecting to the Internet. You can also run a LTSP workstation on a VM on your laptop.

OS: You can run any version of Linux on your LTSP server.

LTSP Version: You can use version 4.2 or newer

Documentation (60%)

You must document all the steps, with all the commands, needed to setup your LTSP server. Listings of all the configuration files used by the LTSP should also be included as part of your documentation.

Demonstration (40%)

You must be able to demonstrate a working LTSP server and workstation before the due date.

Option B - Net-to-net VPN Using OpenSWAN

Task

Set up a net-to-net VPN using OpenSWAN (IPSec)

Hardware: The two VPN gateways can run on the Lab machines or on your laptop(s). If you run the gateway on your laptop, you need to have two Network Interface Devices on it: one for connecting to the protected (private) network, and the other for connecting to the public network. You need a cross-over CAT5 cables for connecting the machines in the protected (private) network to the VPN gateway. You need two VPN gateways and at least two other machines: one in the local private network, one in the remote private network. If you are using your laptop for this assignment, you can set up your private network using the VMs on your laptop.

OS: You can run any version of Linux: SuSE, Fedora, Debian, Gentoo, Ubuntu... (FC10 is recommended)

Software: OpenSWAN

Documentation (60%)

You must document all the hardware configuration, OS version, OpenSWAN version, versions of all the other supporting libraries and tools plus all the steps with all the commands used. Listings of all the configuration files used by the gateway should also be included as part of your documentation.

Demonstration (40%)

You must be able to demonstrate a working net-to-net VPN set up in the Lab before the due date.
