FUDCon Tempe 2011

A FUDCon for North America will be held January 29-31, 2011, in Tempe AZ. A group of Seneca faculty and students will be attending.

What is a FUDCon?

FUDCon is the Fedora Users and Developers Conference. These events are held on a regional basis around the world to enable Fedora developers, contributors, and users to meet face-to-face, to learn, to plan, and to hack.

FUDCons generally include three elements: a barcamp (unconference), hackfests, and a social night (FUDPub).

Barcamp

A barcamp is an "unconference" -- a type of conference planned dynamically, on the day of the event. Typically, the barcamp starts with a session where anyone who wishes to speak lines up and is given a short time (15-30 seconds) to "pitch" their talk. The names of the talks are written on sheets of paper which are then taped to a wall; after the pitches, attendees checkmark the sheets to indicate which talks they most want to attend. Talks with no (or very few) checkmarks may be cancelled, or talks with few checkmarks which are on related topics may be combined. The sheets are then arranged to create the schedule for the day, with time slots as rows and rooms as columns. The conference then proceeds according to the schedule.

Hackfests

Fedora develoers and contributors rarely get to work face-to-face. The hackfest sessions provide an opportunity for members of the Fedora community to work together in person on code, tests, packaging, documentation, marketing, planning, and many other activities. Hackfests may take the form of consultations, or writing sessions (code or documentation), or tutorials.

FUDPub

FUDCon's social evening, known as FUDPub, is an opportunity for Fedora community members to let their hair down and enjoy some fun with friends. FUDPubs always include food, and may also include pool, bowling, karaoke, or other activities.

FUDCon Tempe 2011

FUDCon Tempe will be held at Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ from January 29-31, 2011. Details of this event may be found on the Fedora wiki.

Seneca at FUDCon Tempe 2011

The Seneca School of Computer Studies (SCS) and Seneca Centre for Development of Open Technology (CDOT) will be sending a group of faculty, students, and research staff to FUDCon Tempe.

Packing

  • Pack only carry-on luggage - avoid checked baggage:
Category Quantity permitted Examples Maximum Size - Maximum Weight
Standard Article 1 Small suitcase 23 cm x 40 cm x 55 cm (9 in x 15.5 in x 21.5 in), wheels and handles included - 10 kg (22 lb)

  • It is strongly recommended that you bring a laptop with Fedora installed.
    • Make sure your laptop is charged before the trip, in case you are asked to turn it on at the security checkpoint (to prove that the battery really is a battery).
    • Your charger, a USB key for transferring files, a compact extension cord or power bar, and an ethernet cable are recommended.
    • If you do not have a laptop, please contact your professor about borrowing one from CDOT/ORI.
    • Free WiFi is available at the Toronto and Phoenix airports. According to Air Canada, wifi will probably not be available on the flight.
  • All liquids/gels/creams such as shampoo, toothpaste, and shaving cream must be packed in containers of 100mL or less, and contained in a resealable clear plastic bag (zip-seal bag) of 1L capacity or less.
  • Medications must be in their original packaging. Prescription medications must include the prescription label.
  • Do not bring any sharp items (knives, screwdrivers).
  • You may want to consider bringing earphones or earbuds for the in-flight entertainment system.
  • Bring your passport and any applicable visas.
  • If you intend to call home during your trip, it is a good idea to bring a prepaid long-distance telephone card; be sure to purchase one that will work in the USA. Caution: roaming fees for using Canadian cell phones in the USA can be astronomically expensive.

Money Matters

  • You will be responsible for paying for your food on the trip; it is recommended that you bring a small amount of US cash, and either a bank card that works with the Plus or Cirrus network or a major credit card.
  • A shuttle to/from the Phoenix airport is expected to be provided by the hotel. If this is not available, you may need to pay for travel to/from the hotel.
  • During the flights, you will be able to purchase food using a credit card (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express). If you do not have a credit card, consider making arrangements with another student who does. Beverages and a very light snack (pretzels, peanuts, or chips) are usually provided.

Alcohol

In accordance with the trip forms and Seneca regulations, alcohol must not be consumed on this trip.
